Banda Aceh Mayor Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal participate on observing the solar eclipse from the fourth floor of Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center Building (TDMRC) Unsyiah in Ulee Lheue, Wednesday, March 9, 2016.
In Banda Aceh, the solar eclipse is only visible in part of 70-76 percent sun area that covered by moon shadow. While other areas in Indonesia such as Bangka Belitung, Palu, and Palangkaraya experienced a total solar eclipse.
Thousands of people ranging from children to adults witnessed a rare natural phenomenon of over 18 meters altitude building which also functioned as the escape building. To observe the solar eclipse that began to be seen at 6:45 pm on the eastern horizon, the Office of Religious Affairs in collaboration with the Aceh BMKG prepared four telescopes that can be used interchangeably by the citizens. In addition, hundreds of specialty glass was also prepared by the committee.
Illiza were on the top floor TDMRC building up to peak eclipse occurred at approximately 7:22 pm. Furthermore, by foot, Illiza together citizens go to Masjid Baiturrahim within approximately 300 meters to carry out the eclipse prayer in congregation.
The mosque is a silent witness to the earthquake and tsunami of 2004 did not seem to be able to accommodate thousands of worshipers in attendance.
