Even though fourteen years have passed, it is difficult for the Acehnese people to completely forget about the devastating tsunami that occurred on December 26, 2004.
Many miraculous experienced by disaster survivors are still reminded today. One of them is the story of the mosque which seemed untouched by the torment of the big waves. Among other things is the Baiturrahim Mosque in Ulee Lheue, Banda Aceh.
For the Acehnese people who are most of them are Muslim, this fact is strengthens their faith in Allah SWT.
The Baiturrahim Mosque is only tens meters from the Ulee Lheue beach. When the tsunami hit this area, all buildings are totally destroyed by the devastating wave. However, illogically, the Baiturrahim Mosque is still firmly standing between the rubble of the buildings.
Aside from being a place of worship, the Baiturrahim Mosque is now become a tsunami tourist attraction for tourists visiting Banda Aceh. To get to this destination, it only takes 10-minute drive from the city centre. The Baiturrahim Mosque stands near the entrance to the Ulee Lheue beach tourist area. Every December, this mosque is crowded with the tourists who take the tsunami trail travel in Aceh. Being in this mosque not only makes us comfortable with the beauty of its architecture and coolness, but also gives a spiritual awakening within us.
