Under the blazing morning sun, as many as 770 fishermen crowded the coast of Gampong Jawa, Banda Aceh, on Sunday, 9th December 2018. The anglers are seen lined up on rocks while waiting for the bait to be baited by fish.
Gampong Jawa Beach has always been a fishing spot for fishing hobbyists. Moreover, almost every afternoon, local fisher men do tarek pukat (the activity of pulling fishing nets together on the beach), a tradition which has been passed down for coastal residents of Aceh. This beach is also one of the entry and exit routes for small to medium sized fishing boats.
The mayor of Banda Aceh, Aminullah Usman, who opened the fishing competition program, wanted to show the wider community that there is abundant marine wealth in Aceh. This sea potential can be used to support tourism activities and invite investors.
“This (fishing competition) has been held four times, it will also be held again next year. Later at this location we will build supporting facilities, “Aminullah Usman said when opening the competition.
The Banda Aceh Fishing Tournament, which is held on the purpose of promoting the city, was attended by participants from various regions. To increase the enthusiasm of the participants, the Mayor will buy the three largest fishes obtained by the anglers. It was additional gift besides the main prize set by the organizer.
The head of the Banda Aceh Tourism Office, Rizha, said in his report that this activity was held in order to actualize the vision and mission of Banda Aceh Mayor, where one of the priorities of the people’s economic development was from the tourism sector.
This fishing tournament lasted a full day and was divided into two classes, namely the traditional class which was followed by 550 participants and artificial bait classes by 200 participants.
Gampong Jawa beach has a beautiful panorama. So, for those of you who are in Banda Aceh, you can enjoy the sunset here while enjoying dusk. There are various foods and drinks that you can order too.
Not far from the beach, in Gampong Ulee Lheue, Meuraxa District, the Banda Aceh City Government developed basket fishing tours by empowering the local fishermen.
Basket fishing tours provide several tour packages, such as fishing in the sea, snorkelling, and travelling to the islands of Aceh and Sabang. The tourists can also take crabs or lobsters that are trapped in the cage that has placed at night by the fish farmer. It is interesting, isn’t it?
